On May 26, 2017, Georgia Street Media was part of the ROVE Art Walk in Mount Pleasant, Vancouver. This free walk has been happening twice a year since 2013, and sees local artists open their studios to the public as a celebration of art and community.

As relative newcomers to the Mount Pleasant area (we moved into our current space in August 2016), we wanted to get to know our neighbours and properly introduce ourselves to the community. After hearing about ROVE and what it stands for, we were inspired!

As our expertise is in filmmaking, we began exploring the neighbourhood and it’s artists with our cameras. There are so many talented people in this community, but they may not typically be considered “artists.” Our aim was to explore the many forms that art can take and celebrate them through an original video installation to be screened at ROVE.

Over a six month period we filmed with a number of Mount Pleasant’s small business owners. We collaborated with artists such as illustrator Johnnie Christmas, florists The Wild Bunch, pinball wizards John’s Jukes, and custom guitar builders Basone Guitars. These people are all artists, makers, and creators in their own way.

Our final video piece, entitled “Mount Pleasant: We Make Things,” takes viewers behind-the-scenes with each artist as they work through their process.

On May 26, Georgia Street Media opened it’s doors as part of ROVE to share this video installation with the public.
The response was overwhelming! We had almost 300 guests through our space!
Featured creators joined in the fun by answering questions from the audience, guests discussed community, art, and what they loved about the Mount Pleasant area, and Main Street Beer was on tap.

Here are some images from the evening taken by our amazing intern Joel Law.

A massive THANK YOU to our featured artists for letting us into their daily lives, the ROVE team for putting this event on, and all of our friends, family and colleagues that came out to support us.
We feel so fortunate to do what we do, and are so excited to be part of this community!
